A new series to introduce Anglers to the natural flies that abound on our Lakes and Rivers.

This series will appear each month as the season progresses.Suggested artficial patterns and fly dressng tips.

The Month of May

With the summer on its way and the days getting longer and warmer the most prolific flies on the rivers and lakes are the Day Flies or Ephemera . As their name suggests they only have a very short life and most live only 1 day.

The adult fly has a slightly bluey tinge to its wing as shown in the photo on the left.

Fishing the Dun as it is called is very exciting fishing indeed . Trout are rising up to the surface and sucking the flies in .As dry fly fishing is an extremely selective part of angling it is considered by many to be Purist Fishing and Matching the Hatch exactly.

Artificial patterns that float and have imitation wings of fur or feather are very successful.

As to the size of fly needed to represent them I think a size12 or14 up eyed hook.

Tail:long hackle fibres . Body : Olive green seals fur substitute. Ribbing : Oval gold.

Wings: Blue Dun Hen hackle tips tied upright. Or squirrell tail fibres tied in upright and divided.

Hackle : Blue Dun dyed Cock hackle.

Other popular patterns, representing the emerging Duns ( Nymph stage ) are the Sawyer Pheasant Tail Nymph, and Gold Ribbed Hare's Ear nymph
